Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford applied instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won a position on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate's stand-up humor and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her admiration.
